Many of people living in the small village of Kuala Gandah only speak a local dialect language. This teacher is hired by the Malaysian government to visit the village and teach the local children and some of the adults Malay.
This week I am planning a series of editorial portraits for my blog.
This man was making necklaces outside one of the Hindu Temples in Klung, Malaysia. He was more than happy to allow me to take his portrait and later I had the opportunity to photograph some of his family as well. More portraits to [...]
This is the end of my week of old and soon to be forgotten buildings in Shanghai. This is what’s left of a building in mid demolition in the Jing-an district of Shanghai.
It always amuses me to see the sinks and taps out on busy streets. This one is next to a busy bus loading and unloading area of Changde Lu near Nanjing Lu, in the Jing-an district.
In the Jing’an district, on a back street off Beijing Lu near Changde Lu, there are even more buildings being cleared and demolished to make way for modern developments. This grand looking door has four pieces of paper giving notice of these developments. I wonder what will happen to the door and the handles, will [...]
12 apartments make are cleared in this section of housing to make way for a bigger development. Urban renewal in Shanghai.
It is not difficult to find urban regeneration in Shanghai. The buildings in the foreground are being knocked down to make way for more modern developments of residential building. Behind are more recent buildings. None of them are particularly pleasant to look at. This shot is taken in the Jing An District just off Beijing [...]
Shanghai is a mass of constucture at the moment in preparation for the 2010 Expo. Scenes like these are no uncommon for the Shanghai skyline.
Interesting textures. Taken in the Embankment Building on Suzhou Creek in Shanghai.
Designed by Palmer & Turner and completed in 1935, the Embankment Building was once the biggest apartment complex in the city, stretching for a quarter of a mile on the north of Suzhou Creek. It is located right beside the main China Post office [...]
Just a little walk changes you perspective quite a lot. Compare this image with another taken on the same day called: Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone
This is my last image of Hong Kong in this series taken in March 2009. I was only in HK for 3 days but it was a great trip for scouting out interesting locations and capturing images all over the city. My day job pushes me to take images at night and to be fair [...]
This man has been working out of his small shop at exit 2 of Central MTR in Hong Kong for the past 17 years. He’s clearly very busy but also very friendly and more than willing to have his portrait taken. Thank you and I’ll bring you a print next time I’m in Hong Kong.
Moving into a phase of taking pictures showing everyday life and transport. Naturally for me this seems to occur when the sun has gone down. Guess the day jobs gets in the way of anything involving natural light at the moment.
I was returning from an evening taking pictures on Hong Kong’s Kowloon waterfront and decided to capture some images on the metro. This is one of the good ones.
There is definitely better coffee options in Hong Kong, but at least you know what you’re going to get in Starbucks and it’s always a good atmosphere. The branding still looks good to me as well
Neon lights, tungstan lights, halogen lights, sodium vapour lights… they all work for me. I came across a cool street whilst in the Kowloon area one evening. There was a butchers, laundry, fruit shop, everything you might expect in China. Then just around the corner is Starbucks… that’s an image for another day.
So many of the people in Hong Kong live in buildings such as these. On the outside they look stacked together and cramp, in reality the outside never reflects what could be going on inside these homes. Some will be worse then they look on the outside and some will be as homely and confortable [...]
I took this series of images to capture the lights, feel and gesture of the Kowloon area.
My first time to Temple Street Night Market and I recognised the view before I setup my tripod. This must be the classic shot of the district with lots of people milling around and the tall residential buildings above looking down onto the market stalls. To deal with the shifts in colour temperature around the [...]
The Star Ferry terminal is located on Kowloon directly opposite the Hong Kong Island cityscape. I was looking to take some images of the view of Hong Kong across the water when this small ferry came along and about 20 people loaded onto it. It just bobbed around in the water for the next 5 [...]
This is the first in series of images from Hong Kong taken last weekend.
Hong Kong has a wealth of opportunity for great images. I was in Hong Kong for an International Baccalaureate conference related to teaching, learning and assessment of part of the IB curriculum. It was a long weekend without any opportunity to see [...]
Another from my series on the Millennium Eye and along the South Bank of the Thames. This one reminds me of an impressionistic London.
I’m starting this week with a couple more images from my trip to London in December last year. The Millennium Eye is always fun to photograph.
