This is one of the new Expressway roads opened earlier this year in Shanghai. Caught at a quiet time, but believe me it can get busy!

Building China :: unfinished road with family
Building China :: unfinished road with family

This is currently one of my  favourite images and represents life in the suburbs of Shanghai.  There has been frantic construction going on for several years now to place Shanghai in the best infrastructure position possible.  The domestic Hong Qiao Airport recently opened a brand new terminal and this happened in conjunction with a new [...]

Shanghai Road Construction :: new conversion of an old image
Shanghai Road Construction :: new conversion of an old image

I took this image last year and I was never really happy with my original black and white conversion.  Having recently worked on more images from the same area after the construction was completed, I decided to go back to this image and some others to look at how I can improve them.  This one [...]

Vancouver :: Night time construction I
Vancouver :: Night time construction I

The preparation for being the host city for any Olympic Games is a massive commitment.  During 2007/8 the city of Vancouver has been the home of incredible engineering projects, massive cranes and many disgruntled locals.  Hopefully the hard work will pay off in the long run.
The next series of work is from a project looking [...]

Keeping the constructions dust out of your hair and mouth is a serious business around the road construction sites.

Shanghai @ Work :: Road Construction X Refelctions

The road construction series might have to come to an end soon. At least the black and white series. Colour to follow.

Shanghai @ Work :: Road Construction IX Curves and Straight Lines
Shanghai @ Work :: Road Construction IX Curves and Straight Lines

You may have noticed all these images are black and white  There really is no colour in these images at all.  It’s dusty, grimy and dirty on these roads and the story I’m trying to tell with these images is all about the shapes, curves and lines.

This is just a small part of a very very very huge project.

Shanghai @ Work :: Road construction VII Inside the Scaffording
Shanghai @ Work :: Road construction VII Inside the Scaffording

These grids of scaffolding are under the new expressways being built here in Shanghai.  They are a labyrinth of scaffording and quite fascinating to look at. The men who put this network of grids together work incredible fast. One wonders if they would enjoy playing with lego or mechano??

Shanghai @ work :: Road construction III
Shanghai @ work :: Road construction III

This is the area leading into what will be the Hong Qiao transportation hub.  The massive amount of construction here is not only about new expressway roads, but it also encompasses new metro lines, light rail, high speed long distance rail links and a new airport for domestic travel.  At the moment and on the [...]

Shanghai @ work :: Road construction in Minhang

The current series is from the area around the Hong Qiao Shanghai airport and mostly black and white.  The world going on here is impressive albeit incredibly dirty.

Shanghai @ work :: Building a road!
Shanghai @ work :: Building a road!

West of the main city lies Shanghai’s, and probably China’s, biggest construction project underway at this time.  There are overhead roads being built from every direction converging on what will be a transport hub for people living in the Shanghai metro district or travelling to places further afield such as Beijing.
I pass through this construction [...]

Shanghai @ Night :: Alleyways and City Lights

Alleyways and city lights is the subject of this posting.  Taken one evening in November 2009 just before it started to get really cold in Shanghai.  This area near to People’s Square is undergoing major construction and renovation.  The ambient lighting around the centre of Shanghai is also pretty crazy at night!

More (de)construction in Shanghai
More (de)construction in Shanghai

It’s a busy time in Shanghai at the moment.  The Expo 2010 is a big deal and much of the city is going through construction and in many places destruction as well.  This image is from a area of the city between People’s Square and Nan Jing Xi Lu.

It seems like I’ve been living in cities of construction for the past 3 years.  First Vancouver where they have been preparing for the 2010 Winter Olympics for the last few years, and now Shanghai where rapid construction seems to be a way of life - and especially because of the World Expo taking place [...]
