The green door in this one makes an interesting contrast from the normal red style.
Seen in Mu Du, near Suzhou :: June 2010
This is from a series of recent work I’ve been doing focusing on the detail of doors and entrances. In China there is a very standard way to label streets and give house numbers. This one is number 140 on West Street in Mu Du which is a small and pretty town just outside of [...]
This is my last “Making an Entrance” portfolio preview from my main website.
This lock was seen in Beijing and I just love the colours, texture and feel of this very traditional old lock.
For those of you who are interested, the Chinese Characters are read” Shen Ji” My dictionary doesn’t have a meaning for these two [...]
Another set of interesting handles. I love the texture in the painted door and around the plates which are fastened to the door
This time also seen in Beijing :: July 2010
These styles of handles can be seen all over China, some old and wore, some new and shiny!
This pair against the green door were a little different and I love how each side have worn away differently.
Seen in Beijing :: July 2010
Another old door way and to me this is very much what the traditional Beijing hutong area’s look like.

Another Beijing door handle, this one is at number 12!
Beijing :: July 2010
Some of the old traditional housing in this area has some wonderful architecture and whilst the buildings are often old, scruffy, dirty or just falling down, you also find this type of front door proudly standing.
Seen yesterday along QianMenXiHeYan Jie in Beijing :: July 2010
Everything door related is fascinating me at the moment, the colours, textures, small variations in design, also the way the doors are looked after or neglected.
Entrances in Shanghai also have a standard numbering system using blue squares with the road name and number. These start to look interesting when they get old or are falling [...]
This rusty brown/red colour is very typical of the colour used to paint many houses in Shanghai.
Seen in Xujiahui :: June 2010
This old lock was seen in Xujiahui and is full of character!
Shanghai :: June 2010.
I’m beginning to get quite a liking for all the different types and varieties of door handles in Shanghai and elsewhere around China.
These were attached to an old door in a very traditional residential part of Xujiahui in Shanghai.
June 2010.
Most of the time the entrances to houses in Chinese buildings area exactly the same and there is little variation. It’s the same colour paint, same standard design. This one in Xujiahui has had a little decoration!
Shanghai :: June 2010.
