This is one of the new Expressway roads opened earlier this year in Shanghai. Caught at a quiet time, but believe me it can get busy!
Seen near Shanghai Hongqiao Airport :: July 2010
This is currently one of my favourite images and represents life in the suburbs of Shanghai. There has been frantic construction going on for several years now to place Shanghai in the best infrastructure position possible. The domestic Hong Qiao Airport recently opened a brand new terminal and this happened in conjunction with a new [...]
A couple bikes parked by a wall in Mu Du, near Suzhou, China.
Seen best in black and white :: June 2010
Exposing for the highlights gives this one a darker feel and it’s just what I wanted to be able to show the busy atmosphere at one of the bus stops in the centre of Suzhou.

This lady seems a little more elegant with her head tilted up a little!!
Seen in Suzhou, China :: June 2010
The next series of manikins were seen in Suzhou, China. All the fashion shops were using these old and pretty gross manikins and I’m not really sure how they make the clothes look better!!

The green door in this one makes an interesting contrast from the normal red style.
Seen in Mu Du, near Suzhou :: June 2010
These door numbers in Mu Du, near Suzhou, China have amazing texture and character.
After spotting one, I just had to make a small collection of the most interesting. See more in my recent work portfolio and over the next few days.
Seen in Mu Du, near Suzhou :: June 2010
This is from a series of recent work I’ve been doing focusing on the detail of doors and entrances. In China there is a very standard way to label streets and give house numbers. This one is number 140 on West Street in Mu Du which is a small and pretty town just outside of [...]
I took this image last year and I was never really happy with my original black and white conversion. Having recently worked on more images from the same area after the construction was completed, I decided to go back to this image and some others to look at how I can improve them. This one [...]
It’s the barber’s chair that I think is really cool!!
Seen in Tongli, near Suzhou, China :: June 2010
This is my last “Making an Entrance” portfolio preview from my main website.
This lock was seen in Beijing and I just love the colours, texture and feel of this very traditional old lock.
For those of you who are interested, the Chinese Characters are read” Shen Ji” My dictionary doesn’t have a meaning for these two [...]
Another set of interesting handles. I love the texture in the painted door and around the plates which are fastened to the door
This time also seen in Beijing :: July 2010
These styles of handles can be seen all over China, some old and wore, some new and shiny!
This pair against the green door were a little different and I love how each side have worn away differently.
Seen in Beijing :: July 2010
Another old door way and to me this is very much what the traditional Beijing hutong area’s look like.
Seen in Beijing :: July 2010
Yesterday I relaunched my website with a new look and some new portfolios. I still have my favourites - urban blues and the world at night, but now I’m ready to show some of my work looking at doors, entrances and handles - it’s the detail and life of these Chinese doors that really interests [...]
This image was taken somewhere in the heart of the Hutong’s near the Hou Hai area of Beijing. There were lots of people going about their daily business in this very traditional part of Beijing and this little chap happily posed and started skipping as I was taking pictures up and down the alley.
Many of [...]
Someone please tell me that the man on the left is a relative of Mao!
Seen in Shanghai :: June 2010
I used to think street photography and capturing images as you see them to be challenging and somewhat a matter of luck. Since living in Shanghai I’ve come to enjoy this style of photography and learn’t that it’s not about luck at all; the element of planning, working out your intention beforehand and the ability [...]
This has been previously published on one original website as part of a series of work showing urban Vancouver, Canada.
I really wanted to included it in my Urban Blues collection for the new website and with this improved treatment, it works just brilliantly!
Seen in Vancouver late at night with a 15 second exposure and the [...]
