This is currently one of my favourite images and represents life in the suburbs of Shanghai. There has been frantic construction going on for several years now to place Shanghai in the best infrastructure position possible. The domestic Hong Qiao Airport recently opened a brand new terminal and this happened in conjunction with a new [...]
Exposing for the highlights gives this one a darker feel and it’s just what I wanted to be able to show the busy atmosphere at one of the bus stops in the centre of Suzhou.
Seen in Suzhou, China :: June 2010
The green door in this one makes an interesting contrast from the normal red style.
Seen in Mu Du, near Suzhou :: June 2010
This image was taken somewhere in the heart of the Hutong’s near the Hou Hai area of Beijing. There were lots of people going about their daily business in this very traditional part of Beijing and this little chap happily posed and started skipping as I was taking pictures up and down the alley.
Many of [...]
Someone please tell me that the man on the left is a relative of Mao!
Seen in Shanghai :: June 2010
I used to think street photography and capturing images as you see them to be challenging and somewhat a matter of luck. Since living in Shanghai I’ve come to enjoy this style of photography and learn’t that it’s not about luck at all; the element of planning, working out your intention beforehand and the ability [...]
I’m pretty sure this is unpublished on my blog, although it might be on my old website somewhere.
This was taken in Chicago during a very brief roadtrip and we ended up with only about 3 hours in the city. It was an opportunity not to miss!
Seen in Chicago, USA :: June 2008
This has been previously published on one original website as part of a series of work showing urban Vancouver, Canada.
I really wanted to included it in my Urban Blues collection for the new website and with this improved treatment, it works just brilliantly!
Seen in Vancouver late at night with a 15 second exposure and the [...]
This is most definitely unpublished from before and for those friends of mine who think that Cleveland, Ohio is an ugly city then look again!
Seen from the lakeside looking towards downtown Cleveland, Ohio, USA :: June 2008
I’m relaunching my website in a week or so and currently working on the images for the new galleries.
One theme I’ve enjoyed for sometime now is all about night time urban photography. The places are not necessarily well known, but the images are hopefully strong and full of deep blues.
Rediscovered in my archive: Under the [...]
After a couple days of the Urban Planning Museum and what they think Shanghai will look like… I feel the need for a present day view!!
This is the night time view from the hotel lobby of the Marriott Hotel at Tomorrow Square on Nanjing Xi Lu in Shanghai. I believe it’s the 38th floor.
The future [...]
Zhongshan Park is one of the 4 or 5 main urban centres of Shanghai and currently the area I live. In fact you can see my apartment, it’s on the bottom right and the second building of 3 tall buildings…
The Urban Planning Museum in Shanghai is really quite cool - they have a whole city [...]
This is the future of Shanghai and a glimpse of what it will look like 10 years from now in 2020.
To be fair, it’s not changed much - it’s just that one very tall building in the middle of Lujiazui in the Pudong area that’s being built at the moment which is different from the [...]
My final image for this series on buddhist shrines and this time it’s a montage of 9 images showing the variety of colours and styles of shrine along one road in the Chinatown area of Kuala Terengguna.
Kuala Terengguna, Malaysia :: April 2010.
This one is a little different to the others in this series. Instead of worshiping the god of the sky, this one is to worship the god of the land. It’s position is pretty strange too as it is at the side of the road, not obviously near any entrance and has a large road [...]
Probably the most simple of all the shrines I saw in the Chinatown area. This one was full of incense and looked very effective against the large plain wall.
Kuala Terengguna, Malaysia :: April 2010.
Bright and blue sets off this shrine in the Chinatown district of Kuala Terengguna. Some of these shrines must have been up for a long time to be so weathered and old looking. The message is usually the same though and this one talks about the god in the sky.
Kuala Terengguna, Malaysia :: April 2010.
Many phones, many colours and styles. I’m not sure what makes theses interesting to me, but it keeps me happy!
I’m putting together a montage of telephones from different places around the world and decided I really should include one from China. I found this previously unprocessed image in my achieve.
Zhujajio Water Village, near Shanghai :: October 2008
They still have the box here, but it looks like the phone disappeared a long time ago!
More from KL, Malaysia. This is another sister image of a photograph I made in 2009.
I really wanted to revisit the Petronas Towers when I was in KL this month and to photograph the towers from the same spot as the night time images. Whilst this is an okay image, the night time version is [...]
Singapore by night :: April 2010.
Got to say… it’s a pretty cool city/state/country!
One of the more original houses in Singapore.
Seem being restored in the central area :: April 2010.
